TerreLenz / Capabilities
Capabilities
Does it do this? Every feature, and its limits, on one page.
What TerreLenz models, solves, measures and exports, area by area, with the limit that matters for each row. Where a row says “2D”, the feature is in planar and axisymmetric models; “3D” means solid models too. Everything here is in the current pre-release build; the validation report gives the accuracy behind the numbers.
- 2D planar, 2D axisymmetric and 3D models
- Magnetostatic, AC, transient, electrostatic, current flow and heating studies
- Windows and macOS; Python built in
Model types and physics
What it solves.
| Capability | What is supported, and the limit | |
|---|---|---|
| 2D planar models | ● | A cross-section extruded by a depth; every study type, rotation, stroke, sectors and periods, circuits and netlists. |
| 2D axisymmetric models | ● | x is the radius, y the axis; solenoids, plungers, pot cores, loudspeakers. Stroke along the axis; no rotation (nothing to turn). |
| 3D models | ● | Solids from shapes, sketches, STEP, IGES, STL and extruded DXF. Magnetostatic, AC and transient studies, electric studies and heating. |
| Magnetostatics | ● | Nonlinear B-H curves, magnets with demagnetization knees, coils and magnets together; at several rotor positions, stroke positions and current levels in one run. |
| AC (time-harmonic) | ◐ | Eddy currents in solid conductors, skin and proximity effects, complex permeability, losses per body, impedance. 2D: saturation by an effective B-H curve (fundamental only). 3D AC is linear. |
| Transient | ◐ | Time stepping with eddy currents, saturation, circuits and rotation in 2D, fixed or adaptive steps, start from zero field or from the AC steady state, end at steady state. 3D: coils on current or voltage sources with series R, L and C, eddy currents and saturation, fixed steps; no switches, netlist or motion. |
| Electrostatics | ● | 2D and 3D: terminals at voltages or floating, dielectrics, space charge; capacitance matrix, charges, peak field and breakdown margin, forces, a partial-discharge check along field lines (Paschen). |

| Heating | ◐ | 2D and 3D temperatures from copper, eddy-current, iron and Joule losses, steady state or in time, fed back into the magnetic solve (resistivity, magnets). Conduction in solids; air gaps do not conduct. |
| Magnetizing | ● | A transient that magnetizes magnets element by element with the fixture's field; the map is saved and applied to magnets in another model (2D and 3D maps). |
| Several studies per project | ● | Named studies with their own settings and inputs, solved together and compared; linked models that share parameters. |
| Linear and small-signal solves | ● | Every material linear at a click (how much saturation matters); 2D AC small-signal solve about a DC bias with linearized B-H curves (biased chokes, saturable reactors). |

What TerreLenz doesn’t do.
The honest list, so the answer to “does it do this?” is never a surprise.
- Motion in 3D. Rotation, periodic sectors, netlists and the controller in the loop are 2D. 3D transients take current and voltage sources without switches.
- 3D AC is linear, and 2D AC treats saturation by an effective curve: use a transient for waveforms distorted by saturation.
- Element order is 1 or 2.
- Hysteresis: minor loops and DC-biased iron loss are not modeled; losses are Bertotti per harmonic.
- Structural and acoustic solves: the forces, force waves and a noise estimate are provided for export to structural tools; TerreLenz does not solve vibration or sound itself.
- Superconductors, topology optimization and a remote solving service are out of scope for 1.0.
- Linux installer: builds from source today.
